Meet The Author
Stories have always played an important role in the shaping of Gary’s thinking – especially stories in parabolic form, object lessons and true-to-life. From the earliest days in school, church and Sunday School, “I still can remember stories which impacted my life as well as the story tellers e.g. my pastor or teacher.” Pithy one-liner sayings have always played a major role in his learning and faith development.
His involvement in Primary education, Children’s Ministry and Chaplaincy had a span of almost 50 years. He has always had a creative and innovative flair for developing resources and recycling, re-purposing and up-cycling.*
Almost half of his teaching career was spent as a Music Specialist, during which time he wrote scripts, composed, and arranged the music for two original musicals.
Back in the mid to late 2000’s, Gary had already developed a reputation for being a resource person, and so he took on the task of offering new school chaplains some simple and practical resources including some of the Courtyard Games presented in his first two books.* These books have been used by many chaplains and children’s workers all around Australia. He spent the next few years mentoring and resourcing new chaplains within his network of contacts.
*Many of the resources from these books of games promoted the use of recycling materials on the premise of:
‘minimum resources … maximum impact’.
Since retiring Gary has continued in a mentoring role in various capacities including supervision of a number of chaplains.
He has always been passionate about resourcing people—equipping children, professionals and peers with simple and creative ways of looking at life, education, faith, ministry and building relationships.
“Back in 2006 my supervisor asked me what life goals I had—of which writing was one of them. My supervisor challenged me that by the next catch-up I was to present to him the first chapter of a book—which I did—but still have not finished that book!” However, by 2009 the first of seven books was (self) published. Then in 2015, the first of his three picture story books was (self) published. Early in 2020, he completed my first short chapter book. Details of these books can be found at:
“During my time in Chaplaincy a number of people encouraged him to consider documenting some of the stories I shared – albeit that they needed to be shared anonymously i.e. without risk of breaking confidentiality. After retiring from Chaplain early in 2015, one of my daughters challenged me to consider telling some of the stories in picture book format.”
“Early in my chaplaincy career I began to realise the degree to which children suffered from low self-esteem. Although being self-centred their sense of self-worth was noticeably very low. This affected their self-confidence in relationships as well as their ability to bounce back. This was expressed in a variety of forms: from perfectionism, anger, rejection, criticism, attention seeking, degrading self-talk, depression, isolation from social-peer friendships, suicidal thoughts and simply being unable to read the social nuances of others.
What was more revealing to me, after the last of these picture story books was completed, was that these indicators had actually been part of my own life-story. After all these years, even though I had been a Christian pretty much my whole life, I suddenly realised how much I had struggled with low self-esteem for many years. It was then the Lord showed me why it was I could relate to these kids’ stories with so much empathy. In my growing up years, I had no one who could really help me identify my own issues of life or speak into my life.
My journey into chaplaincy brought together all my experience as an educator, kids’ pastor, and church pastor. It was as if they had all converged for ‘such a time as this.’
